Dmitry Gogolev, Deputy Head of RusAccreditation, took part via video conference in a meeting of the Council for Agrarian and Food Policy and Environmental Management under the Federation Council, dedicated to state regulation in the field of production and circulation of genetically modified organisms and products obtained using such organisms or containing such organisms.

The issues of improving legislation in the field of control over the circulation of GMOs and products obtained with their use, conducting fundamental and applied research to study the impact of GMOs were discussed at the meeting.

The participants of the event noted the need to improve the equipment of domestic laboratories that conduct research on the content of GMOs in products. The Deputy Head of RusAccreditation reported that in the national accreditation system more than 700 testing laboratories were accredited to conduct research on food products in accordance with national standards and technical regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union. More than 80 laboratories of them carried out research on GMOs.

Dmitry Gogolev noted that in order to identify the content of specific types of GMOs in products, including the lines of GMOs that had passed state registration and had been allowed for use, it was necessary to extend the scope of accreditation of testing laboratories accredited to conduct research on food products. He supported the proposals of the meeting participants on the need to improve the testing methods for GMO content in products. According to the Deputy Head of RusAccreditation, this required the approval of the relevant innovative national standards (research methods).
